Bratislava

After deciding we had too many nights booked in Munich we decided to cut one night off and head somewhere else. As we were going to every other major town close to Munich we made the weird decision to head to Bratislava for one night.

The train journey alone was interesting. Our train to Vienna was running late and so we had to run catch 3 different trains through 3 different stations to try and catch our train to Bratislava. We ended up making it with 2 minutes to spare. A little close for comfort considering it was the last train that day. We were also told by the train conducter that our Eurail ticket wasn't valid in Slovakia so we were supposed to by another ticker. But she seemed nice enough as we explaind how we had made the mistake and she said OK. You get off in two minutes at the Bratislava station.

Upon arrival into Bratislava we had no idea what to expect. It seemed a little different to the rest of Europe we had just come from. Dodgy almost, but I think that all just came from our pre concieved thoughts. After getting lost looking for our hostel (the Downtown Backpacker) we decieded to ask for directions. Not that many people spoke English but they were more than happy to help as they pointed us in the right direction.

That evening we decided to just go for a walk and ended up finding the main square of the "Old Town". This to me was possibly one of the nicest squares that I have seen in Europe so far. It wasn't too big or to small. It had beautiful old buildings, cobbledstone streets & of course churches everywhere. That evening we went to a small restaurant where we had some delicious pasta and some well deserved beers.

The next morning we went for a walk up the hill to the main sight of Bratislava. The Bratislava Castle. The view from here was amazing. You can see the Danube below and the new development off in the distance. You can also see the industrial area but the main sight is the old toen below. After wandering throught the Old Town for a few hours we called it a day and caught the train to Vienna.

I don't know if I could spend any more than a day or two i Bratislava but I think it is definately worth that at a minimum.
